South Africa's Garden Route and Little Karoo offers superb birding
in 5 biomes. Garden Route Birding's mission is to encourage birding
in the Garden Route and assist in developing a Biridng Route while providing
information about accessible birding sites, convenient birder friendly
accommodation and travel routes. The Garden route offers a diverse range
of habitats and is home to approximately 300 species of birds with close
to 30 species endemic to the Southern Cape making it an ideal destination
for bird watching.
With a variety of scenic routes, formal bird hides, three National
Parks and numerous Cape Nature reserves, opportunity abounds for a rewarding
birding visit to the region. In a short period of time you are able
to traverse fynbos, Afromontane forest, Milkwood Forest, Dune fynbos,
wetland, marshes and lakes, riverine systems and coastline offering
veiwings of the colourful Sunbirds, glimpses of African Real, and the
reward of spotting both the Knysna Turaco and Narina Trogon.
The lake system in the hart of the Garden Route comprising 5 lakes
are ideal locations for waterfowl and waders, four species of Kingfishers,
and easy viewing of resident African Fish Eagles.
